Cuba wakes up in National Mourning after Presidential Decree 1147

Havana, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuba awoke today under a period of National Mourning, declared in Presidential Decree No. 1147, in homage to the Cuban combatants who died in the line of duty while confronting the US aggression against Venezuela.

During this period, which will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. local time today until midnight on Tuesday, January 6, the Cuban flag will fly at half-staff on all public buildings and military facilities throughout the country, and all public events and activities are suspended.

“With profound sorrow, our people have learned that during the criminal attack perpetrated by the United States government against the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, carried out in the early morning of January 3, 2026, 32 Cubans lost their lives in combat.

They were serving on missions representing the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, at the request of their counterparts in that country,” President Miguel Diaz-Canel stated in his declaration.

“Our compatriots honorably fulfilled their duty and fell, after fierce resistance, in direct combat against the attackers or as a result of the bombing of facilities,” the President said.

“Through their heroic actions, they upheld the solidarity of millions of our fellow citizens,” the president stressed.
