Chile receives international support to combat forest fires

Santiago, Chile, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Firefighters from Mexico, Uruguay, Spain, and Argentina are working alongside Chilean firefighters to combat the forest fires in the south-central part of the country, which have so far left 21 dead and 46,000 hectares burned.

The executive director of the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), Rodrigo Illesca, deeply appreciated the solidarity shown in the face of the fires affecting the Biobio, La Araucania, and Ñuble regions.

“This cooperation strengthens our operational capacity and demonstrates that, in the face of emergencies, collaboration is key to protecting people, ecosystems, and the country’s natural heritage,” Illesca said.

The first contingent to arrive in Chile was from Mexico, on January 22, and was immediately deployed to the affected areas.

The team is composed of 145 firefighters from the National Forestry Commission and the Mexican Ministry of National Defense.

They also brought a 368-kilogram shipment of supplies specifically designed for this type of emergency.

The following day, 31 Uruguayan firefighters arrived in the disaster zone, along with a doctor and a nurse. This past weekend, they were joined by 10 Spanish experts in air coordination, firefighting operations, emergency management, and strategic analysis.

The last group to arrive was from Argentina, consisting of 15 firefighting specialists and three healthcare workers.
