Cuba launches national campaign against forest fires

Havana, January 26 (Prensa Latina) The National Headquarters of the Cuban Forest Ranger Corps presented its annual national campaign against forest fires.

First Colonel Manuel Lama, head of the group, explained the plans at the meeting held at the headquarters of the National Civil Defense General Staff, led by its top director, Major General Ramon Pardo Guerra.

“Studies and more than 25 years of experience show that in Cuba there are areas with conditions that make it more prone to more intense and larger fires, not only due to the impact of climate variability, but also due to citizen irresponsibility,” Lama Gomez stated.

“Although our operations run from January to May, there is evidence showing a change in the pattern of these events, with their occurrence extending into June, July, and August.

Pardo Guerra, for his part, described the strengthening of prevention, response, and recovery capabilities in the face of natural phenomena as vital.

He noted that their frequency and impact pose a threat to national security, the economy, and the environment.

He stressed that this exercise represents a new opportunity to consolidate territorial resilience, strengthen cooperation between the agencies of the Ministry of the Interior and the defense councils, and ensure that the measures adopted do not create further vulnerabilities.
