The arrest of a former judge is a major blow to Chile’s Supreme Court

Santiago, Chile, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Chilean Public Security Minister Luis Cordero today described the arrest of former Supreme Court Justice Angela Vivanco as a very severe institutional blow to the Supreme Court and its role in the country.

The former official was elected to the highest court in 2018 and also served for a time as the institution’s spokesperson, but in 2014 she was unanimously removed from the body due to her connection with lawyer Luis Hermosilla, accused of corruption and money laundering.

By order of the Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago, Vivanco was arrested yesterday and will be formally charged this Monday with bribery and money laundering.

In this regard, the Security Minister stated that, regardless of who is involved, the arrest of a former Supreme Court Justice is a very serious matter.

In polarized societies, which is partly what Chile has experienced in recent years, this court plays a crucial role as an arbiter in that tension, Cordero stated in an interview with Radio Duna.

He added that there are no historical records of a similar situation in the institution’s history.

In November 2025, Ángela Vivanco’s husband, Gonzalo Migueles, was remanded in custody on charges of alleged bribery, money laundering, and influence peddling.
