China shows strong opposition to possible oil blockade against Cuba

Beijing, Jan 27 (Prensa Latina) China underscored on Tuesday its deep concern and opposition to the actions made by the United States against Cuba, including a possible blockade of oil supplies.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged Washington “to stop depriving the Cuban people of their right to survival and development, to stop undermining regional peace and stability, to end violations of international law, and to lift the blockade and sanctions against Cuba immediately.”

Guo also affirmed that China will continue to provide support and assistance to the Caribbean nation and expressed its confidence that “under the firm leadership of the Cuban Party and Government, the Cuban people will undoubtedly overcome their current difficulties.”

The spokesperson said, “We remark that the Cuban Foreign Ministry (MINREX) has already responded to this matter, stating that such actions are a brutal repression against a peaceful nation that harbors no hostility toward any country, and further demonstrate that Cuba’s economic difficulties are mainly due to the United States.”

The statements are based on a Politico newspaper’s report regarding Washington’s plans to block access to hydrocarbons.

Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio described this intention as a brutal assault against a peaceful nation that poses no threat whatsoever to the United States.
