Local authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, members of solidarity organizations and groups, Cuban residents, and friends of the Revolution attended the event, held at San Joaquin Cultural Center.
Cuban Ambassador to Chile, Oscar Cornelio Oliva, remembered in his remarks the letter Marti sent to his friend Manuel Mercado shortly before being killed in action in Dos Rios.
The Apostol wrote, “I am in daily danger of giving my life for my country and for my duty -for I understand that duty and have the courage to carry it out- to timely prevent the United States expansions over the Antilles and falling with this additional force over our lands in America.”
Cristobal Labra, mayor of San Joaquin district, highlighted the example of the Cuban Revolution, which has withstood the United States blockade for more than 60 years.
Juan Andres Lagos, a member of the political commission of the Communist Party of Chile (CPCh), remembered Marti and paid tribute to the Venezuelans and the 32 Cubans who gave their lives defending Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his life partner, Cilia Flores, during the United States military aggression on January 3.
The Cuban ambassador awarded the Friendship Medal to Flor Araneda, of the Siboney Collective, for her years of dedication to the defense and solidarity with Cuba.
