According to the newspaper, the position was expressed by Gergely Gulyas, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, who believes that the EU’s actions are aimed at continuing the war.
All the steps being taken now in Brussels point to prolonging the war in Ukraine. Hungary is trying to oppose the funding of the war, Gulyas told the press in Budapest.
Gulyas recalled that the EU has already allocated €193 billion to Kiev over four years, a sum that triples the funds received by Hungary since its accession in 2004. Now, the EU is proposing an additional €90 billion “military loan” and a total 10-year package of $1.5 trillion.
Hungary does not want to foot that bill, the minister emphasized.
The Hungarian nation also opposes Ukraine’s accelerated accession process to the EU, deeming the 2027 integration target “unacceptable.” This firm stance redefines alignments within the bloc.
Local political analysts agree that this position reflects Budapest’s sovereign approach, prioritizing its national interests and the pursuit of a diplomatic solution, while viewing it as a head-on clash with EU geopolitics.
