The flow of import and export cargo has visibly increased at the northern Ecuadorian border, Ecuavisa reported.
The television channel informed that the increased activity is already causing cargo buildup in the eight warehouses of Tulcan, a border municipality in Carchi province.
The tariff is not the only factor putting pressure on bilateral trade. In addition to the move, to take effect on February 1, several products will no longer be allowed to enter Colombia through land border crossings under any customs regime.
In that context, the foreign ministers of Ecuador, Gabriela Sommerfeld, and Colombia, Rosa Villavicencio, met behind closed doors this Thursday in Panama.
The meeting represents the first formal contact since Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa imposed 30 percent tariffs on Colombian products, as of February 1.
