Intellectuals and artists denounce new US measures against Cuba

Havana, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) The Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity (REDH), Cuba Chapter, denounced the new measures intensifying the US economic, financial, and commercial blockade against the Caribbean nation.

“Cuba is not a threat to the United States. Trump is a threat to life!” REDH posted in response to an executive order by President Donald Trump, which declares a national emergency and establishes a process to impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba.

The message from the Cuban intellectuals and artists warns that the White House president a few hours ago described “the policies, practices, and actions of the Government of Cuba” as an “unusual and extraordinary threat (…) to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”

The letter states that this assertion is monumentally false and cynical. “The US president is openly lying when he speaks of collaboration with hostile countries; in reality, he is condemning the will of a people to freely engage with the world.”

The statement warns that when Trump’s order speaks of supporting transnational terrorist groups (…) and malign actors who are adversaries of the United States, “it is actually punishing Cuba’s unwavering commitment to solidarity in defending the Palestinian people, its condemnation of Zionist genocide, and its support for the causes of the wretched of the earth, as Frantz Fanon would say.”

Cuba sends doctors around the world. The United States bombs and besieges, the text emphasizes.

Regarding the imposition of a tariff system on countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba, directly or indirectly, the REDH declaration states that this decision constitutes a direct attack against all the people residing in the island nation and their families abroad, regardless of their ideological orientation, political affiliation, social status, or age.

Elsewhere in the text, addressed “to friends around the world,” the organization conveys “our confidence that we will continue together in this struggle which today, with greater transparency, is an anti-fascist battle for Humanity.”
