The institution’s Dissemination and Programming Director, Nelson Carro, stated that the show brings together classic titles in a selection prepared by the Cuban Embassy in this capital and the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), curated by the Cuban Film Archive.
The retrospective, with a daily screening until February 8, includes “Lucia (1968),” “Soy Cuba” (I Am Cuba, 1964), “Vampiros en la Habana” (Vampires In Havana, 1985), “De Cierta Manera” (In A Certain Way, 1974), “La Ultima Cena” (The Last Supper, 1976), “Retrato de Teresa” (Portrait of Teresa, 1979), “Se Permuta” (House for Swap, 1984), and “Fresa y Chocolate” (Strawberry and Chocolate, 1993).
Short films, including “Now!,” “Ociel del Toa,” “Coffea Arabiga” (Arabicca Coffee), “Y Tenemos Sabor” (And We’ve Got Flavor), and “El Arte del Tabaco” (The Art of Tobacco), are also on the list.
Carro stated that “Memorias del Subdesarrollo,” directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea, played a central role in the Film Archive’s anniversary commemoration, as it was the film chosen for the special screening celebrating the institution’s 52nd year.
He noted, “It is a recently restored classic and a fundamental work of Cuban and Latin American cinema, so we felt it was essential to screen it in this context.”
