Myanmar and Russia strengthen cooperation on biosecurity

Yangon, Jan 30 (Prensa Latina) Myanmar and Russia agreed today to strengthen their strategic cooperation in biosecurity, following the third bilateral Coordination Meeting, which focused on scientific exchange and joint response to emerging biological threats.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Science and Technology, facilitated progress on collaborative mechanisms for assessing risks in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as on strengthening regulatory frameworks and communication channels.

The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Aung Zeya, emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation in addressing biological hazards from animals, plants, genetically modified crops, and artificial intelligence-based technologies.

The delegations also discussed the implementation of the Biological Weapons Convention and reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to Confidence-Building Measures.

Russian representatives presented proposals to expand joint work in advanced biotechnology and agreed that the agreements reached would contribute to modernizing this sector in Myanmar.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to hold regular consultations and develop projects aimed at protecting public health and strengthening resilience against biological threats.
