Cuba hosts international symposium on Cultural Heritage

Camaguey, Cuba, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) Specialists from Cuba are debating innovative strategies for the sustainable management of historic centers in this heritage city, at a symposium honoring the anniversary of its founding.

The International Symposium “Challenges in the Management and Administration of Cities” began its sessions in Camaguey, convened by the City Historian’s Office, as a central part of the celebrations for the anniversary of the town of Puerto del Principe, founded in February 1514.

This theoretical event, under the central theme “The Historic Urban Landscape as a Potential for the Comprehensive Development of Heritage Zones,” seeks to propose creative solutions to contemporary difficulties in protecting heritage as a social resource and a fundamental expression of collective memory.

PhD. Nilson Acosta, Vice President of the National Council of Cultural Heritage of Cuba, delivered the opening lecture, “The Cultural Landscape, a Particular Aspect of Cuban Cultural Heritage.”

Acosta highlighted that the cultural landscape, representing the combined work of nature and humankind, is illustrative of the evolution of society.

The debate among specialists delved into the definitions, categories, and degree of human intervention in these landscapes.

It was emphasized that heritage cities are the heart of identity and showcase ways of life, with heritage being an inheritance from the past for the present.

This recognition demands finding an urgent balance between modernity and conservation in the face of urban growth.
