Mexico’s Morena Party rejects US measure on Cuba

Mexico City, Feb. 2 (Prensa Latina) Mexico's ruling Morena party expressed its solidarity with the Cuban people and rejected the United States' imposition of tariffs on countries that supply oil to the Caribbean island.

“We express our firm concern and rejection of the application of tariffs targeting countries that maintain energy cooperation agreements with Cuba, measures that, far from contributing to international stability, deepen the social and humanitarian damage,” the party stated in a press release.

The organization pointed out that these decisions do not impact governments, but rather the people, as they limit access to essential services such as energy, health, and food, and violate fundamental principles of international law and peaceful coexistence among nations.

This decree, another tightening of the blockade imposed on Cuba for more than 60 years, is part of Washington’s current maximum pressure policy against the island and attempts to justify it with the interests of US national security and foreign policy.

The National Regeneration Movement (Morena) issued a “strong call for international decisions to always prioritize the well-being of people, and not imposition, collective punishment, or the use of sanctions as a tool of political pressure.”

It reiterated its full support for President Claudia Sheinbaum and “the foreign policy she has led with responsibility and statesmanship, prioritizing dialogue, diplomacy, and respect among countries as the only legitimate path to avoid a humanitarian crisis and preserve regional peace.”

Activists, members of parliament, and representatives of political parties in Mexico have spoken out in recent days in support of the Caribbean nation in the face of the new U.S. measure, which they have described as unjust, cruel, and anachronistic.
