Pope Leo XIV calls for talks between the US and Cuba

Rome, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) Italian news outlets highlighted Pope Leo XIV's concern over the serious consequences of the United States' new measures against Cuba, and his call for dialogue to ease tensions between the two nations.

Major news programs on leading television and radio networks, local news agencies, and prominent newspapers such as Il Faro di Roma, Il Sole 24 Ore, and La Stampa, among others, emphasized the Holy Father’s dismay at Washington’s actions to try to prevent fuel shipments to Cuba.

Under the headline “Cuba Under Siege: The Pain of a People, the Ferocity of Empire,” the newspaper Il Faro di Roma reported that the Pope raised his voice last Sunday to express his “great concern” about “the news of increased tensions between Cuba and the United States of America, two neighboring countries.”

The analysis highlights the significance of the fact that, after the Angelus prayer at noon last Sunday, “Robert Francis Prevost, the first pope born in the United States, denounced the concrete risk that unilateral political decisions will increase the suffering of the Cuban people.”

The article points out that the reference is clear: to “the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump, which threatens sanctions and tariffs against countries that supply oil to Cuba, directly impacting the island’s energy supply.”

“This measure is neither neutral nor technical, but profoundly political and punitive,” it asserts, adding that it is an act aimed at “paralyzing essential services, hospitals, transportation, and food production.” One word: life.”

The statement also highlights the Bishop of Rome’s call for an “urgent return to sincere and effective dialogue,” to which the Cuban government has always been willing, provided it is conducted in accordance with international law, without interference in internal affairs, and with respect for sovereign equality and independence.
