Spain reaffirms commitment to Lebanon’s stability

Madrid, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reaffirmed Spain's commitment to Lebanon's stability and highlighted the strength of bilateral relations.

Sanchez received Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the Moncloa Palace on Monday, where they signed three Memoranda of Understanding on collaboration between Diplomatic Schools, in the field of Agriculture, and between National Libraries.

According to Moncloa, the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties, the regional context, and cooperation agreements between their countries.

In particular, Sanchez emphasized Spain’s desire to continue supporting the country’s stability once the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) mission ends. Spain has participated in UNIFIL since 2006 with troops stationed at the Libre Hidalgo base. He also said that Spain will be present at the ministerial level at the conference to be held in Paris in March, focused on strengthening the training of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

In the area of development and cultural cooperation, the Prime Minister highlighted the strong relationship with the Mediterranean country, which was declared a priority for Spanish Cooperation within the 2024-2027 Cooperation Master Plan.

In January 2024, Spain announced it would quadruple its aid to up to 30 million euros over the next three years.

Lebanon has a Cervantes Institute in Beirut, two Cervantes Classrooms, and two university lectureships.
