Bolivia: Lithium sector awaits EU visit

La Paz, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) The arrival of a European Union (EU) delegation to the Llipi Lithium Carbonate Plant in the Uyuni salt flat is rising expectation in this sector of the Bolivian economy.

The Foreign Ministry sources confirmed that during the visit the EU representatives will travel to this area in Potosi department to identify ways to provide technical and financial support that will allow Bolivia to integrate into global value chains for critical raw materials.

The Ministry’s website states that their stay in Bolivia aims at promoting an industry that generates added value and technology transfer, with guaranteed respect for local communities and transparency.

The visitors’ agenda also includes meetings focused on education and research, highlighting on technical training for young people.

During their first day in Bolivia, the European delegation was received at the Foreign Ministry by Foreign Minister Fernando Aramayo.

The bilateral talks also included the ministers of the Presidency, Development Planning, and Environment; Economy and Public Finance; and Productive, Rural Development, and Water Resources.

The visiting delegation is headed by Pelayo Castro, Director for the Americas at the European External Action Service (EEAS), and includes Felix Fernandez-Shaw, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the European Commission (EC); Paolo Garzotti, Head of Trade Relations for this region at the Directorate-General for Trade (DG TRADE); and Thouraya Triki, Director of the International Partners department at the European Investment Bank (EIB).
