The face-to-face meeting was arranged after a telephone conversation between the two leaders weeks ago, marking a complete reversal in Trump’s stance toward Petro and Colombia, a country that had been targeted for a possible US military attack.
Trump, who had previously accused Petro of being a drug trafficker, said after that phone exchange that the meeting would be “very beneficial for Colombia and the United States.”
For the moment, tensions have dissipated, although the US president is unpredictable.
Petro arrived in Washington, DC. for the meeting with Trump.
The Colombian Presidency reported that the visitor’s agenda includes political, academic, and business activities, as well as meetings with the Colombian community in the United States.
