During a question-and-answer session with Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu in the lower house, the deputy from the French Communist Party (PCF) remembered that on January 29, President Donald Trump issued an executive order threatening to impose tariffs on countries that supply or sell oil to the island, further tightening the blockade that has been in place for more than six decades.

The national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), Fabien Roussel, also stated that in an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron, he demanded the activation of anti-coercion measures and European Union mechanisms, particularly Regulation 2271 of November 22, 1996, to address the extraterritorial reach of Washington’s aggression against Cuba.

He further denounced Trump’s threat of tariffs on nations that send oil to Cuba, arguing that it will have a devastating impact on the civilian population and further increase instability in the Caribbean region.

The White House chief declared the island an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the United States, the argument on which he based the energy embargo.

This measure will exacerbate the consequences of a blockade imposed since 1962, depriving Cubans of the most basic necessities and risking the paralysis of essential services, Peu told the National Assembly.

According to the communist deputy, France cannot be content with mere declarations of principle, while the new crusade attacks vital sectors such as food, health, and electricity supply, recalling the prolonged blackouts already plaguing the largest of the Antilles.
