“I have been asked about the current situation in Cuba, and I can tell you that the secretary-general is very concerned about the humanitarian situation in Cuba, which will worsen, if it does not collapse, if its oil needs are not met,” Guterres’ spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.
“For more than three decades, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has consistently called for an end to the embargo (blockade) imposed by the United States against Cuba,” the spokesperson stated.
On January 29, Trump declared a national emergency, with an executive order, over the Caribbean nation and deemed it appropriate and necessary to impose tariffs on those who directly or indirectly sell or supply oil to the island.
Dujarric emphasized that Guterres urges all parties to continue the dialogue and respect international law.
Several organizations, members of Congress, and different governments have condemned the United States’ use of unilateral emergency economic powers to restrict Cuba’s access to fuel and trade.
