Uruguayan Government urged to support Cuba

Montevideo, Feb. 5 (Prensa Latina) The Network of Intellectuals and Artists in Defense of Humanity, Uruguay Chapter, called for solidarity with Cuba, particularly from the government of President Yamandu Orsi.

“The sovereign governments of the world must respond with solidarity. The sovereign peoples of the world must respond with solidarity. The Uruguayan government must do so,” stated a declaration from the Network.

This was a response to the decree signed by US President Donald Trump, which imposes an energy embargo and sanctions on countries that donate fuel or trade it with the Caribbean island.

“Yankee imperialism is not pleased with a financial and economic blockade that, since 1962, has attempted to undermine the foundations of the economic and social development of this people who have resisted each and every one of its attacks,” the declaration states.

“Now it threatens to besiege the island, preventing all fuel from entering and attempting to punish all those countries that donate or trade it with Cuba,” it points out.

The statement argues that this represents the cruelest and most inhumane intention behind the blockade of the island, including its extraterritorial application. It is the most terrible proof that the blockade is a crime against humanity, the statement emphasized.

It added that the Cuban people are not a threat to the US “or to anyone.” And it concluded that Cuba is not alone, “it needs everyone” in the midst of its resistance.
