Uruguayan military repressors’ prison sentences upheld

Montevideo, Feb 6 (Prensa Latina) Nine retired Uruguayan military officers will remain in prison in connection with the case investigating the torture of citizens of San Javier, Rio Negro Department, in 1980 and 1984, it was revealed.

Among the victims was Dr. Vladimir Roslik, the last person to be forcibly disappeared by the dictatorship that ruled between 1973 and 1985.

The court ruling upheld the prison sentences for retired military officers Daniel Castella, Rodolfo Costas, Eduardo Sainz, Luis Estebenet, Oscar Mario Rocca, Abel Perez, Jorge Soloviy, Dardo Ivo Morales, and Hector Sergio Caubarrere.

They had been convicted in the first instance on December 22 of unlawful deprivation of liberty, abuse of authority against detainees, and serious bodily harm, receiving sentences of between 11 and 15 years in prison.

Initially, the judge upheld house arrest for seven military personnel who were not already imprisoned for other reasons, but on December 31, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered their imprisonment, considering that the convicted individuals might flee.

Now, Judge Claudio de Leon has confirmed that ruling.
