“All of Italy has received with shock the news of the shooting that has shaken the city of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, causing numerous deaths and even more injuries,” the head of State said in a message of condolence sent to Canadian Governor General Mary Simon.
“On this tragic occasion, I wish to convey the most sincere condolences of the Italian Republic and myself,” the president expressed, adding that “we share the pain of the families for this brutal act of violence perpetrated in a school,” where at least eight people died and 21 others were injured.
Authorities are investigating the incident that occurred in the small Canadian town of just 2,400 inhabitants.
Various news outlets report that the attack was carried out by a woman who then committed suicide. Her identity has not yet been released by the police.
Two more bodies were found in a house near the school, a crime supposedly related to this massacre, the motives for which are unknown.
The Italian president added in his message that “we wish the injured a speedy and full recovery,” while health authorities reported that at least two of the victims are in critical condition.
