Pacific cyclone devastated Toamasina city in Madagascar

Antananarivo, Feb 11 (Prensa Latina) The Malagasy city of Toamasina is today counting its dead while it remains blocked from the rest of the country by the accompanying rains of cyclone Gezani.

The first count of fatalities is 20, a provisional figure with a tendency to increase due to the number of missing persons, still to be determined as the search continues among the rubble of houses demolished by the fury of the winds accompanying the weather phenomenon that also caused injuries to a high number of residents in the city, where about 400,000 people live.

The tasks of rescuing and sending humanitarian aid to those affected by the accumulated waters during hours of inclement downpours that lasted for hours, according to residents’ testimonies.

As usual every year, the hurricane will continue its route through the Mozambique Channel, the waterway that separates this island from the mainland of the African continent.

The disaster is a sinister possibility that every cyclone season hits this island country as the first target, one of the poorest in the world.

Cyclones in the Pacific Ocean are becoming increasingly destructive as a result of climate change caused by excessive emissions of greenhouse gases, mainly from the economies of the industrialized countries of Western Europe and the United States whose successive governments refuse to take radical measures to reverse the catastrophe.
