BASF, a German multinational whose subsidiary employs some 1,200 workers, announced restructuring and staff reduction plans that could affect 40% of its workforce.
The National Director of Labor at the MTSS, Marcela Barrios, told Subrayado that the company’s decision “is part of the dynamics currently taking place in the world of work globally.”
“The company will probably close its operations in Uruguay to establish itself in India, because it has more competitive advantages, and it will even withdraw operations from other countries; this is not just an issue with Uruguay,” she noted.
BASF Uruguay is a service center for the international chemical company headquartered in the World Trade Center in Montevideo. Their tasks consist of providing support in the areas of finance, human resources, logistics, and technology to BASF’s operations on the continent.
