Syrian army takes control of key base after US troop withdrawal

Damascus, Feb 15 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that the Syrian Army has taken control of the Al-Shaddadi military base, in the country's northeastern Hasakah Governorate, following a coordination process with the United States.

According to the Ministry’s Media Department, the armed forces assumed control of the facility, considered one of the most strategically important points in the northeastern Syrian region of Al-Jazira, without providing further details about the procedure.

The Al-Shaddadi base is important due to its geographic location, connecting the Hasakah and Deir Ezzor Governorates.

It had been controlled by the US-led international coalition since 2016, following the expulsion of the Daesh terrorist group, and was used as an operations center and for protecting oil fields.

The enclave’s recovery comes after the Syrian Government announced on January 30 the conclusion of a comprehensive agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), aimed at moving toward a phase of national integration and ending the division in the country.

The Defense Ministry reported on Friday that the Syrian army units assumed control of the southeastern Al-Tanef base, in the border triangle between Syria, Iraq, and Jordan.
