The workers initiated a surprise strike and promised to escalate the strike if their demands for higher wages are not met.

Labor and Social Security Minister Juan Castillo is trying to find common points between the parties.

“They (union leaders) started with 13 minimum wages. Then, they made a counterproposal of nine, and the employers did not accept that either,” he said.

The 24-hour strike began with the workers of the Cuenca del Plata Terminal (TCP), the main container terminal of the port.
