Poland warns of increased crime after conflict in Ukraine

Warsaw, Feb 17 (Prensa Latina) Polish Police Chief Marek Boroń warned about preparing for an increase in crime after the end of the conflict in Ukraine, due to the return of soldiers and the circulation of weapons.

In statements to the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper, Boroń indicated that security forces are working with Ukrainian services to dismantle drug labs and prevent the actions of organized criminal groups.

“We know what criminal gangs are preparing for in the period after the cessation of hostilities,” the police chief stated, as quoted by the Polish media outlet.

Local analysts believe that the arrival of experienced combatants could exacerbate social tensions, while the trafficking of light and semi-automatic weapons is emerging as a challenge to regional security.

The newspaper had previously reported that gangs of Ukrainian migrants had turned a park in central Warsaw into a crime hotspot, reflecting the deteriorating security situation in urban areas.

Boroń’s warning adds to the concerns of other NATO countries on the eastern flank about the long-term consequences of the conflict, beyond the geopolitical and military sphere.
