US-Iran talks underway as military pressure increases in Middle East

Washington, Feb 17 (Prensa Latina) The United States Government continued its air and naval military deployment in the Middle East ahead of scheduled talks with Iran in Geneva on Tuesday, in what some observers see as gunboat diplomacy.

The movements of the US Armed Forces try to exert greater pressure on the Islamic Republic in a show of military might intended to intimidate Tehran, but would also allow for an attack on that country in case the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program fail, as President Donald Trump threatened.

Active reports from the Pentagon, based in the United Kingdom, which include refueling tankers and fighter jets, indicate that these aircraft are being repositioned closer to the Middle East, according to sources.

They are also continuing to send air defense systems to the volatile region, and several US military units deployed in the area that were awaiting rotation have had their orders extended, the same sources quoted in local media added.

Flight tracking data warned that dozens of US military cargo planes have transported equipment from the United States to Jordan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia in the last few weeks.

Iranian media outlets emphasize that the Islamic nation is ready for both results-oriented negotiations and the option of defending itself in the event of war. For Iran and its regional neighbors, the priority is peace and security.
