The publication echoed a report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) that revealed the death toll in confrontations between the Congo River Alliance-March 23 Movement (AFC/M23) and the Wazalendo militias in the territories of Masisi, Rutshuru, and Walikale.
The fighting also left numerous people wounded and caused a mass displacement of the population fleeing the fight.
Since the beginning of January, OCHA has reported renewed armed clashes in several villages belonging to the Nyamaboko 1 and 2 groups, located in Masisi and Katoyi Health Zones, respectively.
This also included the Congolese Army’s airstrike on January 2 in the center of Masisi, which killed 11 people, injured approximately 40, and destroyed the local office of an international NGO.
Other confrontations occurred throughout the month, including drone attacks, which have kept the population in a state of concern, preventing them from carrying out their daily lives peacefully and hindering access to humanitarian aid for those in need.
