Nicaragua’s capital completes public transportation fleet renewal

Managua, Feb 18 (Prensa Latina) Nicaragua's capital city now boasts a complete renewal of its public transportation fleet, having gone from 900 obsolete units in 2007 to 1,164 modern buses, an official from the sector reported.

The director of Managua Municipal Transportation Regulatory Institute (Irtranma), Amaru Ramirez, stated during an interview on the program Estudio TN8 that with the recent arrivals from China, the total number of buses incorporated into the national transportation system has reached 2,180.

In addition, there are 350 DINA buses from Mexico and 1,100 GAZ buses from the Russian Federation, Ramirez explained, as quoted by the Pastran Report Bulletin.

He remembered that in 2007, Managua had 900 secondhand buses, many discarded in the United States and acquired through the efforts of transportation operators during 16 years of neoliberal governments. “Today, thanks to the political will of the Sandinista government, the fleet has been completely renewed and increased,” he stated.

He stated that the 1,164 buses currently serve families in the capital, with more buses on the way to strengthen other routes.

The head of Irtranma also announced that, once the 10.5-kilometer Heroes of the Insurrection Highway is completed, a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will be implemented along that stretch, with an exclusive lane already visible in the inaugurated sections.

For his part, Danilo Sanchez, president of the Regional Union of Collective Transportation Cooperatives, confirmed that the increase of more than 360 buses in Managua resolved the demand during peak hours.
