Uruguay considers sending symbolic humanitarian aid to Cuba

Montevideo, Feb 20 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan government is considering sending humanitarian aid to Cuba, whose population is suffering the effects of the US-reinforced blockade.

“Whenever we can, in some way, lend a hand, we try to do so,” Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin told the press after appearing before the Permanent Commission of Parliament.

The high-ranking Uruguayan official added that the contribution, consisting of rice and powdered milk, would be “symbolic.”

He cited logistical transportation problems that are under review by the Executive Branch.

“If there were a possibility of sending some powdered milk—I repeat, humanitarian aid—we would be happy. What’s the problem? We also have transportation problems and getting it there,” he argued. “We have been contacted by United Nations agencies and organizations, especially those specializing in food issues.

We are talking with them. Hopefully, we can lend a hand,” Lubetkin concluded on the matter.

Cuba is going through a difficult situation after decades of economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by successive US administrations.

The administration of President Donald Trump has sought to subdue the Cuban Revolution at the cost of imposing hardships on the island’s population, exacerbated by the fuel embargo decreed by the US.
