Cuban boxers win at Independence Cup in Dominican Republic

Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, Feb. 22 (Prensa Latina) The four Cubans who participated in the 45th Independence Cup Boxing Tournament, held in the Dominican Republic, won gold medals, reaffirming the high level and strength of this sport.

Saidel Horta defeated Dominican Yohan Aguero in the 60 kg division by a 4-1 decision, in a bout that some spectators considered close.

Olympic champion Erislandy Alvarez won by RSC in the second round against Javier Valdes, also representing the host country, in the 65 kg division.

Nelson William (90 kg) faced Guatemalan Miguel Alejandro Teo in a more tactical than explosive fight, which was scored 4-1 by the judges.

Two-time Olympic champion Julio Cesar La Cruz closed out Cuba’s participation in the Independence Cup with an impeccable performance against Dominican Agustin Tisert, displaying clear dominance that resulted in a convincing 5-0 victory.

Earlier, the three Cuban women in ring of the Independence Cup final had a perfect day, winning three gold medals.

Dayira Mesa (70 kg) decisively defeated Arisleidis Tavares of the Dominican Republic 5-0, Yoana Rodriguez (75 kg) beat Kimberly Gittens of Barbados 5-0, while Magda Masso won the first gold medal for her country in the 57 kg division with a unanimous 5-0 decision against local favorite Génesis de la Rosa.

VWith such results, Cuba was crowned champion of the 45th Independence Cup, after a dominant performance that placed them at the top of the team standings with 31 points, followed by the Dominican Republic with 29 and Guatemala with 12 points.
