Italian MP demands support of Cuba on US Genocidal Measure

Rome, Feb. 22 (Prensa Latina) Italian MP Dario Carotenuto demanded that the Italian government reject the recent executive order by US President Donald Trump aimed at cutting off fuel supplies to Cuba.

In a statement released by the Five Star Movement (M5S), the MP, a member of this opposition political force, highlighted his rejection of recent statements by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, in which he attempted to justify the interventionist goals of the US measure.

Carotenuto denounced that “instead of supporting the Cuban people affected by the sanctions that exacerbate daily emergencies, our government cowardly aligns itself with Trump and his strategy, which has only brought suffering.”

“Italy should boost dialogue, cooperation, and respect for international norms,” and Tajani’s stance “is a grave and irresponsible act, a true disgrace that does not represent our country’s values of solidarity,” as it is being carried out “at a time when Cuba is experiencing a dramatic humanitarian crisis,” he said.

In an interview with CNN in Washington, the Italian Foreign Minister stated, regarding these actions against the government and people of the Caribbean nation, that “it is a communist regime. That is why, for us, it is better to change,” and noted that in this regard, “the Americans are working seriously.”

The minister, who is also the leader of the conservative governing party Forza Italia, added that his American counterpart, Marco Rubio, “is working hard, and we will see what happens in the coming months,” a position that, according to observers, showed his alignment with this policy that violates the human rights of the Cuban people.

With this stance, Tajani “shows once again that he is on the wrong side of history,” stated the Italian parliamentarian, who reaffirmed that “in a country where even ambulances are running out of fuel due to the oil blockade imposed by the United States, what is needed is solidarity.”
