Unexploded ordnance continues to claim lives in Syria

Damascus, Feb 22 (Prensa Latina) A child was killed and another injured after an unexploded ordnance exploded near Tel Al-Hara, northwest of the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.

The Syrian Civil Defense, under the Ministry of Emergency Situations and Disaster Management, reported that residents in the area took the two children to the hospital, where one of them died due to the severity of his injuries.

The agency warned of the dangers posed by explosive remnants, including mines and unexploded ordnance, emphasizing that they constitute a serious threat to the civilian population, particularly children.

It also warned that these devices disrupt daily life and prevent the safe return of displaced people to their homes and farmlands in large areas of the country.

In a previous incident, a civilian was killed and another wounded when a mine exploded as their vehicle passed south of Palmyra, in the central province of Homs.

That same day, two journalists and a soldier were injured by another mine explosion in the city of Salma, in the coastal governorate of Latakia.

According to United Nations estimates, more than 65% of the Syrian population, equivalent to some 15.4 million people, is at risk from landmines and unexploded ordnance, with an estimated 150 victims per month, including many children.
