Italy outlines possible bid for Rome to host the Summer Olympics

Rome, Feb 23 (Prensa Latina) The possibility of Rome hosting the 2036 or 2040 Summer Olympic Games is gaining momentum in Italy, particularly the latter, as it will mark the 80th anniversary of the 1960 Games held in the city.

The president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), Luciano Buonfiglio, addressed the issue following the success of the 25th Winter Olympics, held in Italy from February 6 to 22, according to a report published on the website of the newspaper La Repubblica.

Buonfiglio stated that the Italian capital would be a natural host, since “a percentage of the facilities are already built,” although its candidacy “must be agreed upon and shared, starting with the government.”

For his part, Giovanni Malago, president of the Milan-Cortina Foundation, the organizing body of the recent Winter Olympics, told the press the day before that “today is not the time to debate the issue: it is premature, wrong, and even counterproductive to talk about it.”

The Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper that “Rome 2040 is a dream that requires a few weeks of reflection,” and that it requires the support of various national institutions, as well as the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“I see the right conditions for a candidacy, although we are talking about a distant horizon, obviously, but it is the right time for the city of Rome, which can also take advantage of its status as the capital,” although “an international strategy is also needed,” Abodi added.
