The letter was addressed to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, in which those legislators warned that recent measures by Washington violate the United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of the right of navigation and enterprise, and attack Europe’s interests.
President Donald Trump decreed on January 29 that Cuba represents an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security and announced tariffs on countries that supply or sell oil to that nation.
He later withdrew this latter decision following a Supreme Court ruling against him, though he did not abandon his crusade against the island.
The letter was signed by, among others, MEPs Irene Montero, Marc Botenga, Estrella Galan, Danilo Della Valle, Tilly Metz, Leila Chaibi, Catarina Martins, Isabel Serra, Ana Miranda, Konstantinos Arvanitis, Lynn Boylan, and Katerina Konecna.
The MEPs noted that Trump’s new anti-Cuban crusade is reprehensible, as it is a collective punishment against the Cuban people and interferes with the legitimate economic, financial, and commercial activities of European companies.
The legislators urged Kallas and the other 27-member bloc entities to take concrete initiatives aimed at guaranteeing international relations focused on cooperation and mutual respect, rather than unilateral impositions.
Cuba’s Ambassador to Belgium and the EU, Juan Antonio Fernandez, thanked the 35 MEPs from several countries and parties for their gesture during such challenging times for the island nation.
