“We made some minor modifications yesterday, but we will present it tomorrow,” the president stated.
In her usual meeting with the media, the president mentioned a campaign by certain sectors to criticize a project that hasn’t even been presented yet, and assured that the initiative recognizes the rights of minorities.
“What we call ‘proportional representation’ exists, only in a different way. (…) Anyone who wants to be a representative of the people has to seek the popular vote; it can’t be based on party lists,” she commented from the National Palace.
She also mentioned other aspects of the reform, including reducing the costs of elections, political parties, and even Congress.
“Do you know that some state legislatures earn more than the President and the state representatives? There are municipalities with 35 council members. What do they need 35 council members for? They’re just a way to divide up all public resources,” the governor explained.
Sheinbaum alluded to a meeting held on Monday with representatives of the political parties that nominated her (National Regeneration Movement, Labor Party, and Green Party), and indicated that she presented them with the proposal, which they are currently considering.
