Trade war escalates between Colombia and Ecuador

Bogota, March 3 (Prensa Latina) Colombia will impose 50% tariffs on more than 100 new products from Ecuador, in response to a similar measure adopted by its neighbor, a statement released by the Presidency confirmed.

According to the statement, this was established in the draft bill published for public comment by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism until Thursday, March 5, 2026.

A few days ago, Colombia increased tariffs by 30% on a range of imports from Ecuador, in response to a similar decision announced on January 21 by the government of President Daniel Noboa.

Ecuador subsequently increased its tariffs on Colombian imports by up to 50%. According to the Colombian government, this measure “prevents any Colombian exports to that country from being economically viable, significantly deepens the impact on national security, and further aggravates international tensions,” since it leaves exporters selling to Ecuador highly vulnerable economically.

The draft decree warns that, with the Ecuadorian Executive’s new policy, “Colombian imports would fall by 75%, which is equivalent to $640 million less,” compared to 2025 figures.

Of the 20 main products affected, 15 would tend to see their imports completely eliminated, it noted.

Furthermore, under the proposed scenario, Colombian exports would fall by 79% (a decrease of $1.452 billion), and of the 20 main exported products, a dozen would cease to be exported altogether.

For these reasons, the Committee on Customs, Tariffs, and Foreign Trade recommended increasing Colombia’s tariff rate on Ecuadorian products by up to 50%, “a measure that is strictly urgent, immediate, and cannot be postponed,” the draft concluded.
