In a statement, the organization, comprised of shipping lines and agencies representing the international maritime cargo and passenger transport sector operating in Guatemala, focused on the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Asonav described the Strait as vital for the transport of oil and other raw materials, noting that military operations could disrupt the supply chain and increase fuel costs, particularly for ships’ bunkers.
The association also stated that route changes and/or cancellations of specific destinations could occur.
These schedule disruptions generate longer transit times and additional costs, which could directly impact the import and export trade of this Central American country, the association explained.
Consequently, Asonav added, this will affect the end consumer’s finances.
Currently, a significant number of container ships, tankers, and general cargo vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf, causing disruptions to shipping routes that will affect other traffic.
The Association reiterated its commitment to closely monitoring the evolution of this conflict and its impact on international trade routes for shipping lines.
