It is a lasting cultural icon, when Cohiba represents the ultimate expression of the legacy of Cuban tobacco for connoisseurs and fans around the world; a brand whose history begins before bearing its name.
In the early 1960s, Bienvenido Perez (head of Fidel Castro’s escort) offered him as a gift a Habano made by his friend and roller Eduardo Rivera.
The Commander immediately fell in love with this Habano, which would then be used as an exclusive gift for high foreign dignitaries and later become the most emblematic Premium tobacco brand internationally.
In the 1960s, the Rollers School was founded, a select group of women trained to exclusively produce these Habanos.
Initially, the school operated in several houses of the exclusive neighborhood known as El Laguito, but later moved to a majestic mansion of eclectic style, also nestled in that area.
It was there where was developed the mastery and consistency that have characterized Cohiba to this day, insists the note.
Given the diplomatic role that these Habanos took from their origin, Celia Sanchez, a key figure of the Cuban revolution, identifies the need to give them a name.
Inspired by the taina word used to describe the tobacco leaves observed by Columbus in 1492, she names them Cohiba, thus anchoring the brand firmly to the origins of Cuban tobacco culture.
The message emhasizes that 60 years later, the myth of Cohiba endures, supported by the use of the considered best tobacco from the region of Vuelta Abajo, made entirely by hand with long tripe after being subjected to an additional fermentation process, unique in the universe of the Habanos.
This process defines its aromatic richness, balance and complexity, establishing Cohiba as the apex of craftsman. There are several lines of this luxury product, but the name alone sparks interest from buyers and tobacco experts around the world.
