This was acknowledged by the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MAGP), Alfredo Fratti, who highlighted the extension of the agricultural emergency to the departments of Colonia and Soriano, in addition to the new areas of Durazno, Florida, Lavalleja, Rocha, and San Jose.
“The underlying concern is the drop in production that we will see,” he admitted.
“We don’t know what will happen with soybeans,” Fratti said regarding one of the country’s main export products.
He noted that in some areas the early corn harvest has been affected.
“The expectation is that rainfall will begin to normalize in the second half of March,” he anticipated, although he warned that this “does not solve the problem.”
In February, the government declared an agricultural emergency due to water shortages in several departments, and on Tuesday, Fratti signed a resolution extending it to other territories, which will bring benefits to affected agricultural and livestock producers.
