In statements to the media, broadcast on the digital site of the newspaper Vatican News, the director of the press office of the Holy See, Matteo Bruni, confirmed that “there have been recent talks about the release.”
In a statement issued the previous day by the island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was announced that 51 people will be released from prison, a sovereign decision of the Cuban state, framed in its fluid relations with the Vatican.
“Historically, there has been a communication about the review and release processes of persons deprived of liberty,” reads the text announcing this action, also related to initiatives before the celebrations of Holy Week, according to Vatican News.
The release by the government of Cuba, in January 2025, of 553 sanctioned for various reasons, following a process with the participation of the Vatican, is cited as a decision framed among gestures of goodwill during the year of the Catholic Jubilee.
This recent measure is part of a broader framework of relations between the Cuban government and the Vatican, the report points out, and emphasizes that “In recent years, the Holy See has often played a mediating role, promoting humanitarian initiatives and moments of dialogue between Havana and the international community.”
