Security sources cited by the Iraqi news portal Shafaq News reported that a projectile struck the helicopter landing pad inside the diplomatic mission.
They clarified that the C-RAM defense system was completely destroyed, and after the attack, a thick column of smoke was seen rising from inside the embassy.
So far, neither US nor Iraqi authorities have issued official statements about the incident.
The Embassy had warned its citizens in Iraq last Sunday about increasing risks and urged them to leave the country “as soon as possible” due to the continued threats from Iran and its allied militias.
The attack comes in the context of the war launched on February 28 by Israel and the United States against Iran, which has left hundreds dead, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and security officials.
Iran responded with missiles and drones against Israeli targets and also attacked US interests in Arab countries, causing casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure.
