A release published on the Il Faro di Roma online newspaper indicates that dockworkers from the port of Genoa, in the northern region of Liguria, and members of CALP, have joined the initiative.

They, along with USB leaders, are expected to arrive in Cuba in the coming days.

The article states that this project aims “to break the isolation and concretely demonstrate solidarity with the Cuban people,” amid a tightening of the criminal US blockade against Cuba, following President Donald Trump’s signing of an executive order to prevent fuel shipments to the island.

They point out that the mobilization “has a broader meaning than simply sending goods,” because, for its promoters, “it is not just about sending materials, but about sending a political message that highlights how a prolonged blockade ends up affecting the most vulnerable sectors of the population first.”

The organizers explained that the European Convoy, in which the Italian Agency for Cultural and Economic Exchange with Cuba (AICEC) solidarity association is also participating, will depart from Rome to Havana on Tuesday, with a shipment that will join the one being transported by a flotilla scheduled to arrive in Cuba on March 21.

The Network of Communists of Italy will closely monitor the progress of this initiative through a mission independent of the convoy, but with observation and support functions, carried out by two representatives of that organization, Luciano Vasapollo and Giacomo Marchetti.

The source added that Vasapollo and Marchetti departed for Havana, where they will remain from March 15 to 25, with the purpose, among other activities, of monitoring all stages of the Our America Convoy’s journey and strengthening ties of political solidarity.
