Today’s events include the launch of the book “Lanigi Garawoun (Corazon Tambor): Musica, espiritualidad y etnicidad en los garifunas de Livingston, Guatemala,” by Argentine author Augusto Perez Guarnieri, at the institution’s Haydee Santamaria Gallery.
The event will be chaired by Omar Morales (Guatemala) and Nisleidys Flores (Cuba), and will feature the virtual participation of Perez Guarnieri, who was granted the 2020 Musicology Award.
The colloquium, which will take place this Monday and Tuesday, combining in-person and virtual attendees, also includes the lecture “Matanzas 281 (1974), Federico Smith. Reactivacion de una performance grabada,” by Liliana Gonzalez.
Participants will also engage in workshops on two issues: “Archives: Research and Socialization Strategies” and “Culture is a Political Struggle,” a presentation of the testimonial biography by Afro-Colombian anti-racist activist Alicia Camacho Garces.
Experts from Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay will come together in this meeting, which will contribute new ideas while strengthening academic and cultural ties in the region.
