Agricultural innovations in Camagüey boost production in Cuba

Camagüey, Cuba, March 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is currently promoting scientific projects focused on sustainable food production with innovations that integrate biotechnology and efficient agricultural management.

These initiatives are generating international interest due to their productive, environmental, and economic impact.

Research conducted in the central province of Camagüey stands out for its focus on production chains, a strategy that seeks to integrate science, agriculture, and industry to improve food security and reduce costs in key production systems.

One of the projects centers on Biofloc technology applied to shrimp postlarvae production, considered a viable alternative for optimizing feeding and management in intensive aquaculture systems.

According to the study’s results, the application of Biofloc reduced the consumption of commercial feed by up to 50 percent, resulting in significant economic and environmental advantages.

Specialists indicate that the economic savings exceed 500,000 Cuban pesos in electricity and feed costs, while also significantly reducing the costs associated with traditional farming systems.

Furthermore, the technology contributed to reducing the carbon footprint with an estimated decrease of 132 tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 300 barrels of oil.

Another identified benefit is the environmental stability in the larval tanks, which reduces the need for constant water treatment to maintain suitable conditions in the aquaculture systems.
