Addressing the forum of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in this capital, Vieira expressed that his country rejects coercive measures, including unilateral blockades originating from outside the region.
“I reiterate Brazil’s traditional stance of criticizing and condemning the US blockade against the Republic of Cuba, and I reiterate our full support and solidarity with the Cuban people,” the foreign minister stated at that forum, a prelude to the Summit of Heads of State and Government being held this Saturday.
The Brazilian diplomat also affirmed, in his address, that there is no place for the creation of protectorates in our region, insisting on respect for sovereignty and international law.
The head of Brazilian diplomacy noted that Latin America and the Caribbean are going through one of the most delicate situations in their history, marked by risks of external interference and unilateral responses to global challenges.
He also underscored that this geographic area has learned to resolve its differences through cooperation and maintained that “the negotiated settlement of disputes is what builds a solid and lasting peace.”
Vieira defended CELAC as a mechanism for coordination and recalled that the region was established as a zone of peace, while calling for strengthening the bloc’s role as a space for regional coordination.
