Chilean lawyer: US blockade against Cuba is a crime against humanity

Santiago, Chile, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) Renowned Chilean lawyer Carlos Margotta described the economic, commercial, and financial blockade currently imposed by the United States against Cuba, which has tightened with an oil blockade, as an international crime.

Margotta, who is also the Director of International Relations for the Chilean Human Rights Commission (CChDH), told Prensa Latina that unilateral coercive measures are considered a crime against humanity.

The lawyer stated that this is due to their devastating effects on populations, particularly in the exercise of basic rights, such as the right to life and food.

He noted, “Today we are facing an offensive by the United States that, under the administration of President Donald Trump, not only attacked Venezuela but also imposed this energy blockade on Cuba, affecting millions of men, women, senior citizens, children, and pregnant women, who suffer this international crime.”

He argued that the obligation of the people and humanitarian organizations is to defend Cuba.

Margotta, who is also a member of the Chilean Chapter of the Network of Artists, Intellectuals, and Social Organizations in Defense of Humanity, warned of the Monroe Doctrine, which seeks to reduce the peoples of the Americas to mere colonies.
