The work won the first prize for Choreography from the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) at its premiere in 2006 and was conceived as a song to human spirituality.
Directed by Carmen Souto, the LADC musical group will perform compositions by Yuniel Rascon, Denis Peralta, Damian Nueva, Yordanis O’Reilly, Juan Pablo Solas, and Lizt Alfonso herself, accompanied by vocalist Heydi Chapman.
The titles of the scenes in Alas illustrate states of the soul: “Wings…to be, …to perpetuate, …to exist, …to fight, …for feeling, …to live, …for swing, …for rhythm, …to fly.”
LADC celebrates the company’s 35th anniversary in 2026, and Alas seemed ideal to Alfonso, its creator, as it intertwines drama and humor with the intensity, joy, and restlessness that permeate her homeland.
