In a statement issued from the Government Palace in Beirut, on Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim festival marking the end of Ramadan, Salam warned that Lebanon faces “a complex situation,” marked by conflicts that do not serve its national interests.
The head of Government underscored that the Executive is working with Arab countries and the international community to boost a cessation of hostilities and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, while state institutions remain on high alert.
The prime minister noted that the participation in regional conflicts was not a decision made by the State, but it has resulted in greater levels of destruction and displacement within the country.
Salam insisted on the need for the State to regain the capacity to decide on war and peace, and warned against the country’s involvement in external agendas that could intensify aggression and increase the costs for the nation.
Israel has escalated, since early March, its aggression against Lebanon following an attack by the Hezbollah movement, in the context of the regional escalation linked to the conflict between Iran, the United States, and Tel Aviv.
